Another year, another Call of Duty game. But this year, we’re going back to where it all started – World War 2. Fret not, you’ve probably got the dread like I had when I first heard about this, but Vanguard is brilliant. Call of Duty Vanguard is split into three components for gameplay: the single-player campaign, the multiplayer arena shooting, and the co-operative, PvE zombies mode. Your mileage with the game is going to vary depending on how much you like each/any of these, and how receptive you are to the variably quality of each. Think of this then as a three-part review, with an overall sum up at the end with my subjective scoring. Let us begin. The story takes place in an Arcology—a self-contained city squeezed into an immense skyscraper—and it's obscene with detail. The camera pans across a poised army as my boisterous general gives a fiery speech about honor and victory, and I'm transported back to the virtual battlefields of a time long past: 2004. Total War : Rome Remastered is a very faithful recreation of the series' first fully 3D expedition, originally known as Rome: Total War, with some modest but notable graphical and UI updates. But as astounding as it was at the time, the aging gameplay hasn’t gotten the same attention, and doesn't hold up all that well compared to its successors as a result. The most obvious upgrades in Total War: Rome Remastered are visual.   Having spent several days agonising over how best to explain Quantum League's complex premise, I’ve decided that the best course of action is to (partly) lie. So, I'm going to tell you that this is a competitive 1v1 or 2v2 FPS consisting of three-round matches. At the end of the first round, you travel back in time to fight alongside yourself for the second round; then time rewinds once more, so that you're fighting alongside two previous versions of yourself. With me so far? OK, let me give you an example. I'm playing a 1v1 point capture match. In the last seconds, my opponent and I are both on the point, but they kill me just as time runs out. Time rewinds, the second round begins, and I run ahead of the previous version of myself. My plan is to take out my opponent from the first round before they can kill the version of me a few steps behind. Despite efforts from the second round version of my opponent, I succeed. My first Warzone win was full of highs and lows that I haven’t felt in other battle royale games, where dying can feel like hitting an invisible wall in the middle of a full sprint.  After winning a few early fights in the TV Station, we all died to an enemy ambush and got sent to the Gulag. Amazingly, we all won our 1-on-1 fights and dropped right back into action. From there, we stuck to the shadows and slowly raised funds to call in our favorite custom loadouts. With my tried-and-true M4A1 kitted with a full suite of attachments, I ended with nine kills for a squad total of 20. For as much as Call of Duty: Warzone borrows from the best of its competition, it’s full of smart conveniences that are quickly making it my circle-shrinking murderfest of choice.
